What happens if my Pilates practical teaching is referred?
A referral simply means you need a little more support before you meet the full Level 3 teaching standard — it is not a fail.
Practical teaching assessments at Level 3 require you to demonstrate safe, confident and skilful teaching. If your assessor feels you need more time or practice to reach that standard, you will receive a referral — but this is a normal part of the learning process.
What a referral means
-
You are on the right path, but not quite at the required Level 3 standard yet.
-
Your assessor will provide an action plan with clear, constructive steps to help you improve.
-
You can take the time you need to learn, practise and refine your teaching.
-
You will then attend a reassessment, once you and your assessor agree you are ready.
A referral is designed to support your development, not hold you back.
What to expect after a referral
Your assessor will give you:
-
A detailed action plan outlining what needs attention
-
Specific guidance on teaching technique, cueing, flow, safety or class structure
-
Suggestions for practice such as:
-
Shadowing classes
-
Teaching friends or colleagues
-
Extra self-practice
-
Reviewing online materials
-
-
A mutually agreed timeframe for when you will return for reassessment
You will never be rushed — the aim is to help you reach a point where you feel confident, solid, and fully prepared.
Why the standard is high
Level 3 Pilates teaching is a professional qualification. We only pass learners when we are completely confident they can:
-
Teach safely
-
Demonstrate skilful technique
-
Communicate with clarity and confidence
-
Lead a class effectively from start to finish
When you pass, you’ll know you are genuinely ready to teach in a real studio environment.
