What if some gym equipment is unavailable when filming my practical?

It’s completely fine to make sensible substitutions — just make sure your alternative exercises still meet the same training goals.

We understand that gym equipment availability can vary, especially if you’re filming in a public gym or shared space. What’s most important is showing your ability to adapt professionally and safely while maintaining the effectiveness of your client’s session.

When substituting equipment, choose alternatives that:

  • Target the same muscle group as the original exercise.

  • Maintain the same movement pattern and a similar level of intensity.

  • Align with your client’s overall programme goals and training outcomes.

  • Allow for safe execution and correct technique within your available space.

At the start of your recording, briefly explain to your client that you’ve made an adaptation due to equipment availability. Mention which exercises you replaced and why — for example:

“We’re replacing the seated row with a resistance band row today because the machine is in use, but it’ll still target the same muscles and intensity.”

This not only ensures clarity for your assessor but also demonstrates professional flexibility and problem-solving, which are key skills for all personal trainers and instructors.

💡 Tip: If equipment issues arise often at your gym, consider having a few backup options for each main exercise type (e.g., dumbbell instead of barbell, banded variation instead of cable). It’ll save time and show that you can adapt quickly to real-world coaching situations.
